I think perhaps the proof that God exists is Lennon and McCartney. That meeting, I mean. Anyway, that would be my proof, I suppose. There are and have been many other influences that have pushed and pulled my writing and my playing….but those songs, by those guys….I can say without doubt that they were what generated my desire to be a singer-songwriter. Sure, the idea of achieving pop-stardom and living the big-time life have always been enticements, for me and countless others. Duh. But when all is said and done, it really comes back to the music itself, and the feelings it generates. When I hear the really good Lennon-McCartney stuff (and isn’t almost all of it really good?) I remember the core reason that I was motivated to take the singer-songwriter trail seriously….because those guys made it seem like a noble cause.

This isn’t to say that work by other names like Mozart, Beethoven, Robert Johnson, Cole Porter, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Randy Newman (just to name a few) doesn’t roll across one’s mind and heart and soul quite often. And we’re just talking about the famous ones here. So many fabulous writers and performers….I just want to be in the game. I want to be a part of it. Seems like a noble cause to me.
